2025 World University Presidents Forum: Higher education in AI era

Presidents from universities across the globe have gathered at Zhejiang University to chart the future of higher education in the age of Artificial Intelligence. Reporter Lu Sirui joins the discussion.

Nearly 200 university leaders from 40 countries have come together at Zhejiang University, exploring how AI is reshaping academia.

Experts say artificial intelligence can help balance global educational resources, improve teaching quality, and drive deeper international research collaboration.

They also call for stronger frameworks to ensure that AI serves as a tool for inclusion, not division, in higher education.

COLIN BAILEY President, Queen Mary University of London I think it's incredibly urgent. Because AI used in practicing, industry, company every single day. CEOs in companies are investing millions of pounds into AI systems to try to increase productivity.

WU FEI Dean of Undergraduate School, Zhejiang University Artificial Intelligence is the foundation of science and technology. We want every student in universities to understand AI, use AI and create AI.

However, experts also cautioned about AI's impact on human cognition and critical thinking. They emphasized that the ultimate goal is for students to master AI as a tool, not be replaced by it.

JOANNE WRIGHT Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Education, University of Sydney At the University of Sydney, we are encouraging students to use AI. We allow our students to use AI but they have to tell us that they've used AI. But we also couple that with some assessments where they are not allowed to use AI.

COLIN BAILEY President, Queen Mary University of London It's important that we teach people how to use AI properly. AI is biased, AI can give wrong answers, and we need to make sure that students are ready for employment to be able to use AI properly to make sure that it enhances productivity, but is used ethically.

LU SIRUI Zhejiang Province So the consensus here is clear: the university of the future must be a place of human-machine collaboration. The challenge ahead is to ensure that our educators are equipped with the AI knowledge to guide this transformation, turning a technological revolution into an educational evolution.
